Convenient prototyping with the ESP-32

This development module outputs 30 pins in a 2x15 array on a breadboard. The ESP-32 is a powerful SoC. It has built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and two very fast cores. Its affordable price also makes the ESP32 very popular in IoT solutions.

At the time of the module’s release, the processor on it was described by esptool as:

Detecting chip type... ESP32
Chip is ESP32-D0WD-V3 (revision v3.1)
Features: WiFi, BT, Dual Core, 240MHz, VRef calibration in efuse, Coding Scheme: None
Crystal is 40MHz

This module is equivalent (in dimensions) to MOD-1503.

Specification:

  • PCB size: 52 x 28.5 mm
  • four mounting holes
  • USB-C connector - this allows you to power and program the board, probably the most popular connector type currently
  • USB-to-Serial converter, in this role CH340 - it’s responsible for communication with the ESP-32 chip
  • AMS1117 voltage regulator - provides a stable power supply to the module. In theory, you can apply up to 15V to the VIN pin, and this circuit will convert it to a nice 3.3V. However, remember that the higher the supply voltage, the more heat the chip will generate.
