These diodes are used mainly as suppresors protecting circuits against high voltage spikes induced in relay coils or solenoids. Connecting such a diode properly protects Arduino against harmful voltage spikes (which can reach a couple of tens of volts or even more).
Diode enclosed in DO-41 package, rated at 1A, 1000V
