You will need crystal only in case You use chips like ATmega or ATtiny in own boards.
Most of these chips has built-in crystals allowing to work with clock 8 MHz or 1 MHz. When You need higher clock rate or when You need to work with reliable timings (internal oscillators doesn’t have good accuracy) You will need crystal like that.
